Bamboo Island
Bamboo Island is an artwork i was commissioned to design and build at a client's property in Beachhaven, Auckland. The design process was done in collaboration with the client and was inspired by a shared passion for Japanese zen gardens and contemporary land art.
The structure itself is made up of 255 individual bamboo stakes, lashed together with a black cord for strength and integrity. The only two tools i used in this creation was a handsaw and a rubber mallet - the bamboo i harvested myself at various locations around Auckland.
The island is sown with a cover crop of white clover that spills over the edges and the only other species present is a bonsai'ed Hebe tree centred at the bottom of the sculpture, raised and level.
